A Little Less Holiday Chaos, A Little More Journaling

Because the most wonderful time of the year can also be the most overwhelming.

The holidays are coming, and you know what that means. The shopping lists are growing, the calendar is filling up, the house needs decorating, and somehow we're supposed to make everything feel magical while keeping up with everyday life.

Don't get me wrong, I love the holidays. But between finding the perfect gifts, remembering all the little things, planning get-togethers, and trying to make special memories, it can start to feel like there are approximately 437 tabs open in my brain.

And that's exactly where a journal comes in.

I'm a big believer that sometimes you just need somewhere to put all those thoughts instead of letting them bounce around in your head. Your journal doesn't have to be filled with beautiful handwriting, perfectly organized lists, or deep, meaningful reflections. Sometimes it just needs to be a place to unload a little of the chaos.

Get It Out of Your Head and Onto Paper

You know those moments when you're trying to fall asleep, but suddenly you remember the wrapping paper you need to buy, the cookies you promised to make, and the gift you completely forgot to order?

Write. It. Down.

One of my favorite things about journaling is that it gives all those little thoughts somewhere to go. Make a running gift list, jot down holiday plans, keep track of your budget, or write down every random thing you need to remember.

It doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to work for you.

And there's something so satisfying about crossing things off a list, especially when that list has been taking up valuable space in your brain.

Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

The holidays have a funny way of making us feel like we need to do all the things.

Bake the cookies. Wrap the presents. Decorate every corner. Attend every event. Make every moment magical.

But here's your little reminder: you don't have to do everything to make the holidays meaningful.

Sometimes taking five minutes with your journal and a cup of coffee is exactly what you need.

Write about how you're feeling. Make a list of what actually matters to you this season. Ask yourself what you want the holidays to feel like, rather than what you think they should look like.

Maybe it's more family time. Maybe it's slowing down. Maybe it's simply making it through December without losing your mind over a roll of wrapping paper.

Whatever it is, give yourself permission to make room for it.

Keep All Your Holiday Plans in One Happy Little Place

If you're anything like me, a little organization can make a world of difference when life gets busy.

Your journal can become your holiday headquarters.

Here are a few things you can keep track of:

  • Gift lists: Who you're shopping for, gift ideas, and what you've already purchased.

  • Holiday budgets: Keep those little purchases from sneaking up on you.

  • Recipes and menus: Save your favorite holiday treats and family recipes.

  • Events and traditions: Remember all the places you need to be and the things you want to do.

  • Brain dumps: Because sometimes you just need to write down absolutely everything.

And the best part? It can all live in one place instead of being scattered between your phone, sticky notes, and that random piece of paper you swear you just had.

Don't Forget to Capture the Good Stuff

In the middle of all the holiday hustle, it's easy to forget the little moments that make this season so special.

The funny thing your child said while decorating cookies. The recipe that turned out surprisingly well. The family tradition you hope never changes. The quiet evening when everyone was finally home together.

Those are the moments worth remembering.

You don't need to write pages and pages. Even one sentence a day can become something really special to look back on.

And years from now, I promise you'll be glad you took a minute to write those little memories down.

Your Journal Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

This might be my favorite reminder of all.

You don't need a perfectly decorated journal, matching pens, or an elaborate system to make journaling worthwhile.

Some days your pages might be full of colorful lists and happy memories. Other days they might be messy scribbles, crossed-out plans, and a slightly dramatic rant about how expensive everything has gotten.

Both belong.

Your journal is for you. Not for social media, not for anyone else's approval, and definitely not for another thing to add to your holiday to-do list.

Use it however you need it.

A Little Space for Yourself This Season

One of the reasons I created For the Record Journals is because I love the idea of having one special place for all the pieces of life. The organized parts, the creative parts, the sentimental parts, and yes, even the chaotic parts.

Especially during the holidays.

Whether you're using your journal to keep your gift shopping organized, write down favorite memories, or simply give yourself five quiet minutes at the end of a long day, I hope it becomes something you genuinely look forward to reaching for.

Because the holidays aren't supposed to be about doing everything perfectly. They're about the people, the memories, the traditions, and those little moments that make life feel special.

So this holiday season, grab your journal, make yourself something cozy to drink, and give yourself a little room to breathe.

You can't always control the holiday chaos, but you can give it somewhere to go.

And if that somewhere happens to be a beautiful leather journal that feels completely you? Well, I think that makes it even better.

With love,

For the Record Journals
